Career readiness focuses on initiatives, needs, and resources related to workforce development and career/technical training. Strong partnerships around career readiness are already in place in Walker County with an existing committee focused on career readiness that meets regularly.
Walker County Success
Walker County’s focus on career readiness has been leveraged by a grant from the State of Alabama. The grant, the largest such grant received in Alabama, was based on the multi-sector collaboration among business, industrial development, education and civic leadership. Housed in the Walker County Center of Technology and Bevill State Community College, the project purchased $512,000 in equipment and created a dual enrollment and tuition waivers for students. Walker County schools have implemented dual enrollment and discussions are underway with Jasper City Schools.
We believe a capable, motivated and well-trained workforce will help build and attract a strong industrial community. The Career Readiness Working Group has accomplished a great deal, and its continued success maintains momentum.
The foundation looks forward to being a part of the process by offering our support to lead organizations in the following areas:
Marketing for recruitment of students, secondary schools, and industry
Soft skills training for students to be job ready
We hear from our industry friends that “soft skills” are becoming more important than ever when interviewing applicants for employment. Soft skills are the traits that make someone a good employee and compatible to work with. Companies value soft skills because research suggests and experience shows that they can be just as important an indicator of job performance as hard skills.
Development of Bevill State Community College programs
Bevill State is expanding its career technology programs. In addition to moving the improved program from the Sumiton Campus to the incubator site, Bevill State has partnered with Southern Company to establish a Career Development Center at the Sumiton campus. Bevill State also has new programs under development including Industrial Maintenance and Logistics.
