School Readiness focuses on programs, needs, and resources related to pre-K education.
Through thoughtful discussion, the Foundation and its partners will implement the following five potential strategies as it works to promote school readiness in Walker County:
1. Outreach and Education
It is import to reach out to educate parents about the importance of Pre-K education as a need in Walker County. Ideas for outreach to parents include a community-wide or county-wide school readiness meeting for parents.
2. School Readiness Assessment
Robust research and assessment into the needs and resources related to school readiness for children in Walker County is being conducted. We are looking into materials, websites and developmental tools to help parents as they teach their children in their first four years of life.
3. Marketing and Public Relations
Seeking opportunities for marketing and public relations activities to promote awareness of – and broaden the conversation about – school readiness in Walker County is a must in order to prepare children for kindergarten.
4. Health Screenings
Physical health is extremely important to school readiness and education. Supporting health screening programs, potentially in partnership with the Health Action Partnership, would be an asset to Walker County.
5. United Way Partner
Serving as a United Way Bold Goals partner for Education is a great way to learn from this coalition that is doing excellent school readiness work throughout central Alabama.
These strategies help our community to work toward a goal of 100% school readiness in Walker County. This goal is matched and supported by the United Way’s Bold Goals and Plan 2020.
This ambitious goal reflects the urgency of the need in Walker County and the importance of school readiness to high school graduation and career readiness.
