Youth Leadership Walker County Kicks Off New Year

The staff of the Foundation is looking forward to another great year with Youth Leadership Walker County (YLWC).  A partnership between the Foundation, Chamber of Commerce of Walker County and Bevill State Community College, YLWC offers high school juniors comprehensive look at leadership and how they can make a difference in their community.

Workshop sessions include an overview of our local government and the legal system; an introduction to philanthropy and the grant review process; the education system; as well as a trip to Montgomery to visit with our state’s leaders.

Walker Area Community Foundation gives YLWC $10,000 each year to award to nonprofits and school clubs through a competitive grants process.  In doing so, we teach our next generation the value of giving and the important role nonprofits play in our community.

How do I become a member? YLWC applications can be picked up from your guidance counselor during the first two weeks of September.  Only Juniors may apply.  Information asked for on the application form includes:

  • School and Extracurricular activities
  • List of Community Service Activities
  • School Transcript
  • Personal References
  • Short essay on a problem you see in Walker County

Who can apply for a grant from YLWC?  Applications supporting 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations and school clubs may be submitted.
