Disaster Relief

When COVID-19 first hit in March 2020, uncertainty swept through our community. Schools closed, families faced food insecurity, and local nonprofits scrambled to meet urgent needs. The Walker Area Community Foundation quickly brought together schools, nonprofits, churches, and city leaders to coordinate a response.

We focused first on children and seniors—partnering with Raising Arrows, St. Mary’s Food Bank, Salvation Army, and Backyard Blessings to deliver thousands of meals and groceries across the county. Volunteers, teachers, and local agencies worked tirelessly to ensure no one went without.

We also launched an Emergency Grant Cycle and a program to support out-of-work residents, connecting them to critical resources for rent, utilities, and basic needs. Together, our community rose to the challenge, showing the heart and resilience of Walker County.

On Easter Sunday 2020, tornadoes struck many towns within Walker County. This disaster created the need for Long Term Recovery (LTR) for families displaced because of the storm. We were able to bring 12 families back to being safe, sanitary and secure…the goal of the LTR Committee. So many individuals, churches and communities came together to support those in the greatest need during this time and we were grateful to be a part of the solution for these families.

We are forever keeping our eye on the current situation in our community as we continue to plan for future needs. People are scared during times of disaster, and hopefully, we are providing a sliver of hope for them to cling to in these times. We thank our donors for allowing us the opportunity to help in so many ways. It shows your heart for this community and once again proves that our value is worth more than the money we give.
